High uric acid and gout · United States
Can I eat mushrooms with high uric acid or gout?
A purine chart can make mushrooms look like a food to cross off. Before removing them, separate the mushroom from the meat and seafood that may be cooked with it.
Short answer
Mushrooms do not generally need to be excluded solely for their purines. IQWiG’s evidence summary includes mushrooms among plant foods with little to no observed effect on gout-attack risk. The whole dish still matters.
These food recommendations concern diagnosed gout. High uric acid alone is a separate situation; dietary changes do not replace treatment during a flare.
What to check before eating
- Are mushrooms the vegetable component or the whole meal?
- Is there meat, seafood or a sweet sauce mixed in?
- Have you been given a separate dietary restriction?

Make mushrooms part of a meal
Keep plant foods in perspective
IQWiG includes mushrooms, spinach and legumes in its discussion of plant purines. The evidence does not support automatically treating them like meat and seafood because of a purine chart.

Check what is cooked with them
For a mixed dish, ask about meat and shellfish. Mushrooms alongside a large meat serving do not change the advice for that meat.

Add the rest of the meal
Mushrooms can sit alongside tofu, vegetables and a grain food. If replacing a meat dish, include an appropriate protein food rather than relying on the mushrooms alone.

Three mushroom meals to think through
Keep the mushrooms and look more closely at the recipe.
| Dish | What to check | A useful choice |
|---|---|---|
| Mushrooms with tofu and vegetables | The meal has a plant-protein component. | Serve it with the grain food in your meal plan. Guidance sources: NIH NIAMS [2], Arthritis Foundation [3] |
| Mushrooms with beef or shrimp | The animal ingredients still need a separate decision. | Ask for a tofu-and-vegetable version. Guidance sources: NIH NIAMS [2] |
| A mushroom-only main course | Replacing meat also changes the protein choices. | Add a suitable protein food, such as eggs or tofu. Guidance sources: NIH NIAMS [2], Arthritis Foundation [3] |
These examples concern ordinary food dishes, not mushroom extracts or supplements.
Questions about plant purines
Do I have to cut out spinach too?
Spinach is also discussed among plant foods that do not appear to affect gout risk like meat and seafood. A separate medical restriction may still change your food choices.
Guidance sources: IQWiG / InformedHealth.org (Germany) [1]
Does this cover every mushroom powder or extract?
No. A supplement or extract is a different product. The food evidence here does not establish a dose, benefit or safety profile for those products.
Guidance sources: IQWiG / InformedHealth.org (Germany) [1]
Should I judge the meal only by a purine table?
Use the table as one piece of information. The type of food, the full eating pattern and your own care plan also matter.

Who this guidance is for and further context
High uric acid and gout are different situations
An elevated uric acid result does not by itself mean gout. If you have high uric acid without a gout diagnosis, discuss your overall diet and lab results with your clinician. The gout-specific advice below is for diagnosed gout. During a flare, food changes support your care plan; they do not treat the attack.

Background and other choices
What matters for mushrooms
- Plant purines do not have the same observed relationship with gout as meat and seafood.
- Meat and seafood in a mushroom dish need separate attention.
- Evidence about ordinary foods does not establish benefits for extracts.
Practical next steps
- Use mushrooms to add variety to vegetables.
- Ask about meat and seafood in mixed dishes.
- Include a suitable protein and a grain food.
When to speak with your clinician
Ask your clinician about new or worsening joint pain, your uric acid results, or dietary limits related to kidney disease. Follow your treatment plan during a flare; a food guide cannot diagnose symptoms or change medicines.
