Can I eat hot dogs while pregnant?
A hot dog is usually sold ready to eat. At a cookout or a ballpark, the check is whether this one was reheated until it steams.
Short answer
Reheat hot dogs to 165°F (74°C), or until steaming hot, before eating. A warm bun or grill marks on the outside do not answer that check.
Check the sausage, not the bun
- Is the sausage steaming hot all the way through?
- Has it sat out longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F (32°C)?
- Are cold toppings handled separately from the hot sausage?
How to reheat a hot dog
Start from a refrigerated package
Hot dogs can be contaminated after cooking, at the plant or later. Keep the package at 40°F (4°C) or below until you reheat it.
Heat until the sausage steams
CDC lists hot dogs heated to 165°F (74°C), or until steaming hot, as the safer choice. FDA says not to eat them unless reheated until steaming hot.

Serve it hot, or chill it in time
Eat it while it is still steaming, or refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours. Above 90°F (32°C), that limit is 1 hour. Discard food left out longer.

Three ways a hot dog is served
Pick the row that matches where you are eating. The sausage has to be steaming, whatever the setting.
| Where it is | What to do | Skip it when |
|---|---|---|
| Home microwave or pan | Heat a refrigerated hot dog until it steams, then eat it hot. | You cannot heat it through. |
| Grill at a cookout | Check the center, not the stripes. It should steam when cut. | The center is still cool. Guidance sources: CDC [3] |
| Ballpark or buffet pan | Take one that is steaming hot, and eat it then. | It is only warm, or you cannot tell how long it sat out. |
Grill marks and a warm bun are not the endpoint. The sausage is.
Cookout and ballpark questions
Do grill marks mean it is hot enough?
No. Dark stripes show the surface. Cut or thermometer-check the sausage. It should be steaming hot, or 165°F (74°C), through the center.
Guidance sources: CDC [3]
What about a hot dog sitting in warm water?
A warming pan can leave the sausage lukewarm. That is not the same as reheating until steaming hot. Choose one that is heated through, or skip it.
Do toppings change the check?
Reheat the sausage first. Add cold toppings only if they were kept refrigerated and you eat the hot dog promptly. The sausage check still stands.

Background and other choices
What matters for hot dogs
- Hot dogs can pick up Listeria after they are cooked.
- Refrigeration does not kill Listeria. Reheating can.
- Time in a warm pan or on a buffet still matters.
Safer next steps
- Eat it right after it is steaming hot.
- Reheat a refrigerated hot dog until it steams, then serve it.
- Skip a lukewarm hot dog from a buffet or warming pan.
